"The Effect of Healing Touch on the Pain and Mobility of Persons with Osteoarthritis: a Feasibility Study" by LuDF et al is an informative study that looked at the benefits of Healing Touch in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis!

 

 "Two pain outcome measures (intensity and life interference) produced significant interaction effects. Two joint outcome measures (extension and extensor lag) also produced significant interaction effects. Furthermore, the HT group demonstrated significant improvements in 9 of the 12 outcome variables (75%) while no significant improvements occurred in the FV group. The HT group exhibited sustained effects (3 weeks post treatments) in three outcome variables. The reduction in joint pain and improvement in joint function suggest that biofield therapies could be effective non-pharmacological adjuncts to treatment of OA."

A study, Acupuncture Stops Pain via Brain Pathways by Healthcare Medicine Institute researched the mechanism of acupuncture's effect on carpel tunnel syndrome.

 

"Another study focusing on acupuncture’s ability to reduce carpal tunnel pain discovered a brain pathway by which acupuncture exerts its therapeutic results. The researchers measured brain responses to neuropathic pain using fMRI technology. Acupuncture caused significant activation of the hypothalamus and greater deactivation of the amygdala. The researchers concluded that acupuncture benefits chronic pain sufferers “through a coordinated limbic network including the hypothalamus and amygdala.” Click here to read more!

A study, "Auricular Point Acupressure for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Feasibility Study for 1-Week Treatment" showed over 50% reduction in LBP within 1 week. Pain was reduced simply by having pressure applied to specific points on patients' ears. Auricular acupressure done by a trained professional can significantly reduce or fully stop LBP.

Bottom line, our study found evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture for 117 conditions, with stronger evidence for acupuncture’s effectiveness for some conditions than others. The quality and quantity of research into acupuncture’s effectiveness is increasing."

What Does the Research Say?

 

"In a Randomized controlled trial, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcomes measures showed that manual therapy resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, total costs of the manual therapy-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care." (Korthals-de Bos et al (2003), British Medical Journal)

 

“Patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement and satisfaction at one month than patients treated by family physicians. Satisfaction scores were higher for chiropractic patients. A higher proportion of chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.” (Nyiendo et al (2000), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics)

This article is richly filled with practical information along with many scientic research studies. Below is an excerpt from the article:

 

"In a study of 160 women, published April 2002 in the reproductive journal Fertility and Sterility, a group of German researchers found that adding acupuncture to the traditional IVF treatment protocols substantially increased pregnancy success" (Bouchez, 7).

Wish You Could Sleep?

Do you wish you could sleep like a baby but have a hard time turning off your thoughts from the day? If so, this relaxation technique may help you. Begin by tightening then relaxing your body one body part at a time beginning with your feet. Count up to 10 while tightening, then down from 10 while relaxing. Work your way up through your head. Then, tighten and relax your entire body at least 5 times while counting up and down from 10 each time. For added relaxation, dab some chamomile on your pillow. 

Helpful Meditation 

Do you ever feel like you need a little help on the weekends (or your days off) transitioning from work into your weekend lifestyle?  Do you sometimes feel it’s difficult to disconnect with all the responsibilities waiting for you at your job, instead of fully being in the moment with your friends and family on the weekend? If so, please consider practicing this wonderful transition and grounding meditation regularly.

 

Transition and grounding meditation written and read by Dr. Kimberly Leupold

 

Only perform this meditation when it is safe to do so. Never meditate while driving, operating heavy machinery, or other circumstances that need your full attention.

 

Begin in a calm, quite area.  Take several deep breathes. With each inhalation, inhale for 5 counts. With every exhalation, exhale for 7 counts. Breathe deeply in this manner for one minute. Slowly begin counting to 10. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

 

Now, as your breathing, imagine all your thoughts and stress from today float up into a file cabinet. Once all your work related and stress related thoughts are safely set into the file cabinet, gently close and lock the file cabinet, knowing you will be able to return to the file cabinet on Monday or your next workday. Take several more deep breathes, counting to five with each inhalation and 7 with each exhalation. Now envision yourself as your favorite tree. See the colors of the tree, the branches, the leaves, all aspects of the tree. Smell the tree. Feel the gentle breeze and warm sunshine hugging the tree. Feel your feet as the tree roots and root down deeply into the Earth. Feel your roots going down past the dirt, the stones and eventually moving into the red, strong Earth magma. Now breathe deeply. Feel that magma clear away all stress and concerns. Feel it strengthen, empower, and energize you.  Be in this space and breathe deeply.

 

Once you are ready, feel this energy travel up from the Earth into your roots, up through the stones and the dirt. Now envision those roots moving into your feet. Feel the calm, strong energy fill your feet, moving into your legs, your hips, your abdomen, your chest, your arms, your neck, and your head. Feel that strong, calm energy gently moving from your head to your feet grounding you and strengthening you. Breathe deeply. 

 

When you’re ready, slowly begin counting from 10 to 1. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Open your eyes. Acquaint yourself with your surroundings. Notice the colors of the ceiling, the wall, the furniture, the floors.  Be here in this moment. Namaste.   

Acupuncture Stops pain Via Brain Pathways by HealthCMI.com

 

New research confirms that acupuncture reduces pain levels. Investigators discovered that electroacupuncture decreases pain by regulating the expression of several proteins in the hypothalamus, a part of the brain responsible for autonomic nervous system, endocrine and limbic system functions

These findings are consistent with other research on the relationship between acupuncture and brain chemistry. Researchers discovered that electrical and manual acupuncture 'improve menstrual frequency and decrease circulating androgens in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)'(3, healthCMI.com). 

 

Another study focusing on acupuncture’s ability to reduce carpal tunnel pain discovered a brain pathway by which acupuncture exerts its therapeutic results (4, healthCMI.com).

 

A weight loss study found that acupuncture controls the expression of leptin, a hormone that regulates appetite and metabolism. The investigators observed that “electroacupuncture treatment led to a reduction of body weight, ..."(5, healthCMI.com).

 

While this article is written in medical terminology, I think it is helpful to read to understand that acupuncture has significant affects on pain relief, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), carpal tunnel syndrome, weight loss, and stress.
